Everyone has fears; it's unavoidable. Just look at the news or browse social media—don't even get me started on that! Yet, the Bible repeatedly tells Christians to "Fear Not!" Seriously, God, are you aware of what's happening down here? Despite this, Christians are reminded not to fear because when we fear, we often end up worshiping what we fear. Confused? Let me explain. Suppose you fear financial poverty (external fear). What follows? You start idolizing financial security and worrying about not having enough (internal fear). Trust me, once you're trapped in that cycle, you'll never feel like you have enough (the amplifier).
The Bible frequently discusses fear, but not all fears are the same:
Fear of the Lord refers to having reverence, awe, and respect.
Fear of man involves concerns about rejection or physical harm.
Fear of evil relates to moral challenges, wickedness.
Fear of death is less common among Christians, as they find comfort in the promise of eternity. I think the concern is more about the manner in which you will die.
Fear of the unknown is often the most daunting for many people. With so much uncertainty in life, it's only natural to feel afraid.
Fear doesn't need to be a part of your life, though. You can conquer it by understanding that God is always by your side. Don't be afraid of things beyond your control, and consistently move forward with faith.
fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10
Place your trust in God and continually seek His peace. When fear grips you, hand everything over to God. Request that He replace your fear with His peace. Fear and peace cannot reside together; therefore, opt for peace. Finally, ask God to free you from your fears. God is always ready to take away our fears; you simply need to request it.
Prayer: Dear Lord, we ask you to take away the numerous fears we face each day. Help us to trust in you and not be afraid of things beyond our control, letting our worldly fears fade away. We hold a respectful fear of you, Lord, not out of fear of punishment, but because of the reverence you deserve. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen!
