Everywhere you turn, there are assertions about how to improve your life. Promises of surefire methods to transform your life and achieve genuine happiness (naturally, at a cost). The world is rife with hollow assurances, as talk is cheap and often far from reality. James was the brother of Jesus and a leader in the Jerusalem Church. His aim was to reveal hypocritical behaviors and instruct Christians on how to live. Many Christians today frequently assert their commitment to living a Christian life, yet their actions often contradict these claims.
"Now some might argue, 'Some people have faith; others have good deeds, 'But I say, "How can you show me your faith if you don't have good deeds?. I will show you my faith by my good deeds." ~ James 2:18
Upon initially reading that verse, you might think, "We can't achieve salvation through good deeds!" I get it; it appeared to me also, that James was contradicting what Paul said in Romans 3:28." However, I understood that the Gospels do not contradict each other. So we have to consider the context: James wasn't suggesting we earn salvation through good deeds; he was emphasizing that genuine faith naturally leads to transformed lives and good deeds. Service doesn't replace faith but rather confirms it.
The book of James is packed full of general characteristics of the Christian life and it's only 5 chapters. The central themes of his teachings include:
Faith in Action - Don't just talk the talk, but walk the walk. In other words, Christians are encouraged not only to listen and speak but to actively demonstrate their faith through actions.
Trials - Christians are not exempt from the hardships of this world. However, through prayer for wisdom, strength, and patience, they can overcome these challenges. Joy can exist alongside sorrow, anger, and pain because it is an attitude rather than an emotion like happiness. Joy provides contentment when you understand that absolutely nothing can separate you from the love of God.
Law of Love - We are saved by God's mercy, not by adhering to the law. Matthew 19:19 ~ "Love your neighbor as yourself" instructs us to care for and serve those around us. This principle is crucial to a Christian's faith. In loving others, we conquer our own selfishness and We should always be ready to let go of anything we possess to serve others if God asks it of us.
Wise communication - Wisdom is evident when you speak with insight. The tongue holds great power. It's important to embrace God's wisdom before speaking. Proverbs 15:28 reminds us to consider our words carefully before communicating. Always pray for self-control before interacting with others, since your words reflect your character more than the character of the listener.
Wealth- The splendor of worldly material wealth will diminish over time. Christians are encouraged to store up their treasures in Heaven, through serving others sincerely . They should not be swayed by the wealthy or disdainful of the poor. Every Christian is responsible for what they possess and how they utilize it. We should consistently opt for generosity over selfishness.
Did you know that the Book of James shares more similarities with the Sermon on the Mount than any other New Testament book? Take some time to read James. Pray for guidance from God to understand what changes you need to make in your life to follow Christ more closely. Humble yourself if you're not living as God intends. Above all, don't just talk about it—take action!
Prayer: Dear Lord, guide us to live our lives in alignment with our words. Reveal to us the steps we need to take to become more like you. Help us recognize when our actions fall short of our words. Teach us to be "doers" of your Word. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen!
