You can live in the world but don't become of this world.
You can live in the world but don't become of this world.

The difference between living in this world and living of  this world  is spiritual and moral, and it comes from a biblical perspective—especially from verses like John 17:14-16 and Romans 12:2.

“I have given them your word, and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.”~ John 17:14-16

  • In short, Jesus states, “My disciples are now distinct. They exist in the world but are not of it. I ask for their protection as they live for Me here.”

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." ~ Romans 12:2.

  • In short, "Avoid conforming to the masses. Allow God to transform your mindset so you can lead the life He intended for you."

1. Living in the world:

  • This involves being actively involved in the world, taking part in life by working, forming relationships, and raising families, among other activities.

  • It entails interacting with the culture while maintaining your faith without compromise.

  • Jesus Himself stated that His followers are in the world but not of it  (John 17:16.)

2. Living of the world:

  • This involves being influenced by worldly values, such as materialism, pride, selfishness, or pursuing success without considering God.

  • It suggests a deep connection to the world's mindset or lifestyle.

  • It occurs when your identity, purpose, and actions are shaped more by worldly influences than by Christ.

Example: Using Social Media as a Christian

Engaging with Culture:

  • You engage with platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube.

  • You produce or engage with content related to lifestyle, fashion, travel, or comedy.

  • You utilize the latest trends, music, and hashtags to interact with others and maintain relevance.

Not Compromising Your Faith:

  • You refrain from sharing or endorsing content that supports immorality, vulgarity, or hatred.

  • You distribute uplifting, truthful, or faith-based messages, even in subtle ways (e.g., including Scripture in captions, sharing stories about God’s faithfulness).

  • You do not seek approval through likes or popularity; your identity is rooted in Christ.

  • You express kindness in comments and avoid participating in cancel culture, online shaming, or toxic arguments.

Summary:
  • In the world = Involved but separate

  • Of the world = Conformed and compromised

Jesus lived among people and set an example by being present without adopting sinful ways. Christians are called to be in the world to share God's love and truth, but not to conform to worldly values. They should live as citizens of God's kingdom, maintaining holiness and different priorities. Live in the world to reach others, but don't become like the world. We're here on mission, not on vacation. We’re called to shine God’s light in the middle of a broken world.

Prayer : Lord, help us live in this world with purpose, but not be shaped by it. Keep our hearts anchored in You, our minds renewed by Your truth, and our lives a light that points others to Jesus. Strengthen us to stand firm in faith and walk in love. Amen.
